Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Implementing Teaching Strategies

Teaching strategies encompass a range of activities you may undertake in your role as an educator. Though it can be tempting to stick to teaching the way in which you were taught, it is a good practice to consider which teaching strategies you have been using, how your students have responded to them and whether trying other strategies may be beneficial.

Determining the teaching strategies you might use can depend on a number of factors including:

  • Your own beliefs about teaching and learning
  • Your comfort level
  • The specific course you are teaching
  • The size of the course
  • The types of students who enroll in the course
  • Feedback from students
  • The delivery format (online, face-to-face or hybrid)
  • The amount of time that you have to prepare

Below are a number of teaching strategies and a brief description of each. Contact us if you would like to discuss these or any other strategies.  

We recommend starting small by trying one or two strategies that are new to you before making dramatic changes in your courses. Additionally, taking the time to reflect on how things went and make note of it before the next time you might try something similar is a good practice.  It is important to be aware that the same strategy can be a success with one group of students and fall flat with the next group. Be kind to yourself, if things don’t go quite as planned and be prepared to move forward with a backup plan.
