Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Winter 2024 Workshops

TLC Workshops are supported by the Teaching and Learning Centre's Educational Developers and offer participants a variety of programs based on their teaching and learning interests and needs. While targeting primarily members of the University-community engaged in teaching-related practices, other members of Ontario Tech may enroll in our workshops as part of their professional development.

  • Exploring Student Engagement in Hybrid, Blended, and In-Person Teaching - February 29, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

    Whether you're teaching online, in-person, or a mix of both, this session will equip you with the tools you need to design engaging and effective learning experiences. Join us as we explore teaching strategies for hybrid, blended, and in-person classrooms.

    • Understand the importance of engagement to the learning experience.
    • Incorporate a variety of relevant tools and techniques in course design and delivery to assist with maintaining and increasing engagement.
    • Apply rapport building approaches as a means of increasing student engagement.
  • Designing Engaging Assessments with Canvas New Quizzes - February 29, 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

    Are you ready for New Quizzes? In this workshop, we will explore the new question types available with this Canvas tool and demonstrate how you can leverage them to create meaningful and engaging assessments. It is highly recommended that you attend one of the TLC's New Quizzes information sessions before signing up for this workshop.

    • Identify different applications for categorization, ordering, hot spot, and stimulus questions using New Quizzes.
    • Design interactive and engaging assessments using the Canvas New Quizzes tool.


  • Moving Beyond Multiple Choice: Alternatives to Traditional Assessments - March 7, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

    Assessment is an important component of the learning process, and it should reflect the complexity and diversity of students' skills and knowledge. This workshop will explore a range of assessment strategies that go beyond traditional multiple-choice exams, allowing you to assess student learning in more authentic and meaningful ways.

    • Describe the role of diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment in course design.
    • Identify the limitations of multiple-choice assessments.
    • Explore alternative assessment strategies that could be implemented in your courses.
  • Applying Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in Canvas - March 7, 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

    Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an inclusive approach to education that aims to meet the diverse needs of all learners. In this workshop, we will explore how to effectively implement UDL principles within the Canvas learning management system to foster a more inclusive and engaging learning environment.

    • Explain how UDL principles can be applied within the Canvas learning management system.
    • Identify specific strategies and Canvas tools that you could implement in your course to promote inclusion and accessibility.
  • Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) - March 14, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

    The scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) involves systematic investigation of teaching and learning with the goal of improvement. In this workshop we will explore approaches of inquiry and opportunities you have to do SoTL.

    • Explain the importance of SoTL for instructors and students.
    • Identify potential SoTL projects to pursue.
  • Open Ed Hacks for Visual Design - March 14, 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

    Incorporating a variety of media assets into your courses can encourage student engagement and enhance the overall earning experience. In this workshop, strategies and tools for locating, remixing, and creating open resources to support engaging visual design will be explored.

    • Identify the difference between an open resource and a licensed resource.
    • Utilize design principles in conjunction with open resources to promote student interest and engagement.


  • Leveraging Communication Tools in Canvas - April 4, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

    Clear and effective communication is vital for fostering engagement, supporting student success, and building a sense of community in online learning environments. In this workshop, we will explore the diverse communication tools available within the Canvas learning management system and discover strategies for effectively utilizing them to enhance communication and collaboration in your courses.

    • Communicate effectively with your students using announcements, the canvas inbox, and assignment feedback.
    • Facilitate peer-to-peer communication through discussions and groups.
    • Utilize Kaltura to upload media, add captions, and host a virtual classroom.
  • Start with the End in Mind: Crafting Effective Learning Outcomes - April 4, 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

  • Creating Accessible Documents (HR Lunch & Learn) - April 11, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

    Ensuring that your documents are accessible is not just a legal requirement but a crucial step toward fostering inclusivity and reaching a diverse audience. In this session, we will explore strategies for creating accessible content. Participants will also learn to effectively employ accessibility checkers to identify and rectify potential issues.

    • Explain the importance of ensuring accessibility when designing professional and educational documents.
    • Identify strategies for creating accessible content that are applicable in various contexts.
    • Employ an accessibility checker on a presentation to identify and correct accessibility issues.

Workshops are 60 minutes in length and are delivered online via Google Meet at the listed dates and times, unless otherwise indicated.
