University Preparation Program (UPREP)

The Ontario Tech University Preparatory Program (UPREP) is a specialized summer transition program prepares you for the academic demands of the university.

This program allows students to upgrade their knowledge in key prerequisite areas prior to beginning an undergraduate degree program at Ontario Tech. You may use the knowledge and skills developed through this program to prepare you for success in undergraduate University studies.

📢 Students with a conditional offer to Ontario Tech University that requires the University Preparatory Program (UPREP) must successfully complete UPREP in order to enrol in Ontario Tech.

If you require UPREP, you will receive an email with instructions on how to register for the program.

UPREP 2026

Which Modules Do I Take?

Depending on the academic program you applied to, UPREP has two or three required modules. All modules are virtual (online-only) and live (synchronous) and you must attend them. Your UPREP registration email will send you the right combination of modules, so you don't have to worry.

👉 Everyone in UPREP completes these two modules:

Module 1: UPREP Kickoff (module code UPR-ORI101)
Meet university staff, learn what professors expect, discover helpful learning strategies, and find out how to access key campus resources and services.

Module 2: UPREP Writing (either Humanities Focus, UPR-WRT202, or Technical Focus, UPR-WRT201, depending on program)
Strengthen the basics of university-level writing and learn what strong academic writing looks like at Ontario Tech.

👉 If you’re entering Business & IT, Health Sciences, Engineering & Applied Science or Science (including Bachelor of Science, Psychology):

You must also complete a third module, because your first-year program includes math.

Module 3: UPREP Math (either Functions Focus, UPR-MTH301, or Pre-calculus Focus, UPR-MTH302)
Refresh and strengthen your foundational math skills to prepare for first-year math courses. Through diagnostic tests, group activities, and guided practice, you’ll explore core math concepts and work on the areas you need most.

What Modules Look Like

Writing and Math modules follow this structure:

  • 6 weeks (week of July 13 to week of August 17 - see Program Schedule section for specific dates)
  • 3-hour live lesson online each week from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m.
  • 1-hour guided practice session online each week from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m.

Guided practice is supported by Subject Specialists from the Teaching and Learning Centre who help you apply what you learned to real writing and math tasks.

Module 1 is unique. It follows this structure.

  • 4 days (July 6 to July, 9 2026)
  • 3.5-hour live lesson each day from 9:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

👉 Your UPREP registration email will send you the right combination of modules, so you don't have to worry.

 When are UPREP Classes?

Students who are planning to be away from home for extended periods of time during UPREP must make plans to attend courses online as scheduled in their other locations as excemptions will not be granted for the attendance portion.

UPREP is online and live (synchronous). You’ll be expected to participate actively in real time, so you need the right technology to join classes smoothly.

To take part in UPREP, you must have:

  • A computer or device with a reliable internet or data connection
    • Minimum computer requirements for each Faculty are listed on the Information Technology Services website.
    • If you are buying a new computer, we strongly recommend choosing one that meets the requirements of the Faculty/program your conditional offer is for.
  • A stable internet or data connection (enough for video calls)
  • A microphone
  • A webcam
  • An audio device (speakers, headphones/earbuds, or a headset)
  • Required software
    • A word processor, such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs.
    • Some modules may require additional software. These will be listed in the module syllabus.
    • Any required software is the student’s responsibility to purchase or access.

Note: Online attendance for the program is required. If you do not own a device that meets the expectations above, please look for alternate arrangements to attend your classes (e.g., a family member or friend's device, device at a library or community centre, etc.). Failure to attend classes because you cannot obtain a device in working order will not excuse a student from UPREP requirements.

Passing Grade: A 70% or higher final grade is considered a pass for all required modules. All final grades of 70% or higher will be recorded as PAS, indicating a "passing grade". All final grades lower than 70% will be recorded as FAL, indicating a "failing grade".

Academic Requirements: To successfully complete UPREP, students must meet all academic and administrative requirements outlined in each module. Students are expected to follow all instructions, attend virtual classes, complete assigned work by the stated deadlines, and engage with program communications sent to their university email account.

Conduct: Learners are expected to adhere to the conduct standards of Ontario Tech University. Information regarding student conduct can be found in the Student Conduct Policy in the University’s Policy Library

Academic Integrity: As future Ontario Tech students, UPREP students are expected to adhere to the standards of the Ontario Tech Academic Integrity Policy, which applies to forms of unauthorized use of aids, cheating, plagiarism, and unauthorized use of Generative AI. Students in UPREP will be subject to the disciplinary standards held within this policy.

Non-Payment: Students who fail to pay their required deposit or program fees may be restricted from participating in UPREP. If a student is unable to participate due to non-payment, they will be removed from UPREP, and their offer of admission may be withdrawn.

Access to Course: Students are responsible for maintaining access to their email and online accounts throughout the program, including how to access online course material and meetings. Forgetting passwords or email credentials, losing/breaking a device, failing to read instructions, or failing to respond to emails as required will not be considered valid grounds for appealing UPREP requirements or missed deadlines.

Module 1 Completion: Students who do not successfully complete UPREP Module 1 may be withdrawn from the UPREP program. Their offer of admission may be rescinded, and program fees will be refunded minus the non-refundable deposit.
