TLC Workshops are supported by the Teaching and Learning Centre's Educational Developers and offer participants a variety of programs based on their teaching and learning interests and needs. While targeting primarily members of the University community engaged in teaching-related practices, other members of Ontario Tech may enroll in our workshops as part of their professional development.

  • Backward Design: Aligning Outcomes, Assessment, and Instruction - Thursday May 23, 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

    Backward design is a student-centred design model that starts with the end in mind. In this session, we will discuss the importance of and means to ensure alignment of learning outcomes, assessment, and instruction.

    Learning Outcomes

    1. Identify the four elements of a learning outcome to use in course and lesson development.
    2. Describe the role of diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment in course design.
    3. Construct a course map that aligns learning outcomes, assessment, and instructional plans.

  • Generating Confidence: Demystifying Generative AI - Monday June 3, 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

    Don’t let generative artificial intelligence be the elephant in the room. Let’s explore together the good, the bad and the ugly of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) in the educational context. Learn the basics around generative artificial intelligence and why critical literacy is important as we move forward. In addition, we will briefly touch on ways to leverage GAI to reduce time poverty as faculty. This workshop will be the first in a series that will approach a variety of topics related to generative artificial intelligence.

    Learning Outcomes

    1. Discuss the benefits and challenges of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) in teaching and learning.
    2. Explain the importance of critical literacy in the context of GAI.
    3. Draft a prompt to create and populate a simple rubric.

Elevate your presentation materials with this workshop on crafting clear and visually appealing slides. Learn the importance of accessibility and how to implement design principles to create engaging materials suitable for any audience.

    1. Construct clear and simple presentation materials that will be effective in most contexts.
    2. Explain the importance of ensuring accessibility when designing professional and educational presentation materials.
    3. Utilize design principles and built-in tools to produce slides that are accessible and visually appealing.
  • Decolonizing Your Syllabus - Wednesday June 19, 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

    Academic curriculum, content, and the broader university system exist in a historical context of subjugation and control. The process of decolonization has the potential to disrupt colonial ideologies including the superiority of Western thought. In this workshop, we will examine colonialism in education as well as strategies for decolonizing your syllabus. All disciplines are welcome!

    1. Describe colonization and decolonization and their relationship to education.
    2. Examine existing syllabi through the lens of decolonization.
    3. Envision new possibilities for a decolonized syllabus.
  • Flex-Ed: Strategic Approaches for Teaching in Hybrid and Hybrid-flexible Learning Environments - Friday June 28, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

    Hybrid and hybrid-flexible approaches are becoming more commonplace - are you ready? If you haven’t taken the leap yet, or are searching for ways to improve inclusivity, foster engagement, and optimize learning in your hybrid or hybrid-flexible course, this is for you! In this seminar educators will be equipped with insights and strategies they need to thrive in these dynamic environments.

    1. Discuss the differences between instructional modalities.
    2. Identify approaches to maximize student engagement and learning in hybrid and hybrid-flexible courses.
    3. Recognize the benefits of modality-specific course design and delivery.

You will receive calendar invitations with links to your chosen workshops after completing the registration form.

Workshops are 60 minutes in length and are delivered online via Google Meet at the listed dates and times, unless otherwise indicated.
