Course (Re)Design Institute

This three day intensive program provides instructors—whether tenure-track, teaching stream, or sessional—with a supportive and collaborative space to design or redesign a course.

The Course (Re)Design Institute incorporates a range of evidence-based design principles, including Universal Design for Learning, integrated course design, the science of learning, and inclusive pedagogies. Through structured sessions, discussions, resource sharing, and feedback, participants will create or refine courses that enhance the student learning experience.

Grounded in the "backward design" approach (Wiggins & McTighe, 1998), the Course (Re)Design Institute guides participants through the course development process by starting with the desired learning outcomes, then outlining assessments, and finally, planning instruction for the course.

Using the backward design model for course design prioritizes student learning and there is evidence that students in courses designed using this model may outperform those in traditionally designed courses (Ohio State University, no date; Stapleton-Corcoran, 2023.
