The Student Learning Support Team invites Ontario Tech undergraduate students to join our Peer Learning Program as Peer Educators.

This is a paid opportunity that not only helps you share your course knowledge with your peers, but also builds your resume and leadership skills.

Timeline

  • February 2026: Applications for the Spring and Summer 2026 semester open.
    • Applications will remain open until April 2026, and late applications may still be considered.
  • February - April 2026: Interviews take place on a rolling basis.
  • Late April 2026: Job offers are made.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and interviews are scheduled as applications are received. To increase your chances of being considered for an interview, it is highly recommended to submit your application as early as possible.

Late applications may still be considered, but priority will be given to those who apply early.

If you are selected for an interview, you will need to provide at least one reference (contact name and email and phone number) from an Ontario Tech faculty member or staff member.

Mandatory Training Dates: Spring/Summer 2026

Training is required for all Peer Educator positions. Peer Educators must be able to attend one of the following training sessions in order to be hired.

If you cannot attend and fully participate in training, please wait for the next hiring period to apply for a position.

Program Information

As a Peer Educator, you will offer academic support and guidance to your fellow students.

Depending on the specific needs of our programs, you could be assigned one or more of the following roles:

  • Peer Content Tutor: Help students understand and master course content and provide one-on-one and small group tutoring appointments.
  • PASS Leader: Create activities and facilitate study sessions for courses that are historically challenging.
  • Peer Success Facilitator: Aid students in developing effective and personalized study strategies.
  • Peer Writing Tutor: Assist students in improving their writing skills.
  • Study Hall Tutor or Peer Pod Tutor: Provide drop-in tutoring support in a collaborative environment.
  • Peer Learning Assistant: Support the Student Learning Centre team with administrative duties.

Successful applicants to the Peer Educator Program will meet the following qualification and skill requirements:

Qualifications

  • Must be registered as an undergraduate student in a program at Ontario Tech University.
  • Third- or fourth-year (or higher) standing is preferred, but those in second year may be considered if they can support high-risk and high-enrollment courses.
    • Typically, we do not consider applicants in their first year, as they have not yet taken enough courses to be able to tutor.
  • An overall GPA of 3.3 or above is required.
  • A GPA of 3.7 or above in the selected course(s) being supported is preferred.
    • Prior enrollment with the course instructor who is to teach the selected course is preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) are required.
  • University Works conditional approval is preferred (though not required) for Fall/Winter positions.
    • University Works funding is required for all Summer positions.

Skills

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written), with demonstrated meta-cognitive awareness and a strong understanding of group dynamics.
  • Openness to diversity.
  • Prior experience with group and one-on-one facilitation is an asset.
  • Respect for confidentiality.
  • Strong problem-solving and time-management skills.
  • Strong public speaking skills.

Training is required for all Peer Educator positions:

  • Before assuming the role, Peer Educators must complete a three-day, paid training program from 9 am to 5 pm. Each day will include an unpaid one-hour lunch break.
  • Training is conducted online and/or in-person. Candidates must be actively engaged in the training session, with their camera on and microphone available for use.
  • In order to be hired, Peer Educators must be able to attend a scheduled training program.
