Community of Practice

A community of practice (CoP) involves a group of people (community) with a shared concern, problem, or interest (domain) working together to fulfil individual and group goals (practice).

The Teaching and Learning Centre facilitates a CoP on the topic of Indigenization, decolonization, and reconciliation with broad goals to meet the needs of our diverse community.

We are committed to

  • Generating ideas, seeking feedback, and sharing stories about Indigenizing and decolonizing content, instructional approaches, and interactions;
  • Identifying, developing, or experimenting with strategies and resources that support Indigenous students and/or the inclusion of Indigenous pedagogies and content for all students;
  • And most importantly, to developing a collaborative, supportive, and flexible group interested in Indigenization and decolonization.

Previous meetings have included conversation around the following topics:

  • Inclusion, Indigenization, and reconciliation (what do these terms mean?)
  • Inviting guest speakers
  • Cultural appropriation vs. appreciation
  • BCcampus' Pulling Together Guides
  • Problems of Practice

Future sessions will cover topics such as:

  • Integrating Indigenous and decolonizing pedagogies
  • Including Indigenous-authored sources in your syllabus
  • Inviting emotional connection to material
  • STEM and Indigenous Knowledge

The CoP meets monthly and stays connected in an online course site. Please contact Dr. Kaitlyn Watson for more information.
